Flying the drakes in The Oculus

Unfortunately, I have found it very difficult to fly the drake which my character obtains during the course of The Oculus. Maybe someone can offer some constructive advice and instruction to overcome this obstacle. Of course, I have been flying a griffin for quite a while, so I know the "controls" for the normal flying-mount UI. However, in my experience, the controls for flying the griffin are not implemented quite the same for flying the drakes. For example, when I press the key, the drake either doesn't descend at all or descends for a short distance and stops -- even in mid-air, without any surface on which it has "landed" or by which its descent is blocked. Sometimes there is a sound which signifies that the griffin -- the drake in this case -- has landed on a solid surface. Looking down from an overhead view, though, it does not appear that the drake has actually landed on anything. You can make much wow gold.
Using the key to descend while flying forward works for only a short distance before the descent stops. Pressing an additional two or three times cause the drake to do a mid-air somersault in place. Then I must use the key an equal number of times to enable the drake to move forward again.
